The Geological Museum is located in the main building of the Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas in a 550 m2 hall. The museum’s collections have been replenished through the acquisition of exhibits at exhibitions, museums, expeditions and from individuals in Bonn, Paris, Prague, Vienna, New York, Freiberg, Dresden, Strasbourg, Philadelphia, etc. Over the 140 years of its existence, the museum has collected many specimens from all over the world. The work of the Geological Museum is closely linked to the educational process and contributes to the training of highly qualified specialists. The structure of the museum, whose departments are represented by systematic collections, also serves this purpose:

The geological museum regularly conducts classes with students and excursions for schoolchildren and lyceum students of the city and region, guests and delegations from Ukraine and foreign countries. Scientific work is also carried out. Systematic catalogues are compiled on electronic media for all departments of the exhibition.

The Geological Museum of the Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas is one of the best in Europe in terms of the richness, diversity and representation of its collections of minerals, rocks, minerals and fossils of fauna and flora. One of the founders was a highly educated and talented geologist of Prykarpattia, scientist Julian Medvetskyi, who studied at the University of Vienna at the Faculty of Natural Sciences. While working at the Department of Mineralogy at the Lviv Technical Academy, he began work on systematising collections and creating a museum. Before the Second World War, the museum held a prominent place among similar museums in Europe. In 1963, the museum changed its address. The museum is now located at the Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas. For more than 140 years of its existence, the museum has collected many specimens from all over the world, many of which are unique and of great interest to experts. On 5 December 2007, the Mineralogical Collection of the Geological Museum of Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas was included in the State Register of Scientific Objects of National Heritage by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
